Which Canon ink does your printer use?

Canon produces several types of printers, each using a different ink system. Your printer model number — on the front of the machine — tells you which ink you need.

Pixma cartridge printers are the most common Canon home and office printers in Australia and use individual ink cartridges:

  • PG640 / CL641 ink — Pixma MG3660, MG4260, MX476, MX526, TS5160, MG3560
  • PG645 / CL646 ink — Pixma TS3160, TS3460, TR4660, TR4560, MG2460, MG2560
  • Canon 670 / 671XL ink — Pixma MG5760, MG5860, MG6860, MG7760
  • Canon 680 / 681 ink — Pixma TS6160, TS6260, TS8160, TS8260, TS9560

MegaTank printers use large built-in ink tanks refilled with GI55 ink bottles rather than individual cartridges. The cost per page is dramatically lower than cartridge printing — ideal for high-volume users. Compatible models include the GX3060, GX7060, G3675W, and G3670W.

Selphy photo printers use a separate, dedicated ink-and-paper system. The Selphy Square QX20 uses the XS-20L ink and paper pack. The CP1500 uses the RP-108 ink and paper set. Note that QX20 and CP series supplies are not interchangeable.

Standard or XL for Pixma cartridge printers

PG640/641 and PG645/646 are both available in standard and XL yields. XL cartridges deliver a lower cost per page and are the better-value option for regular users. Combination packs bundling black and colour XL cartridges together offer the lowest overall running cost. The PG640XL and PG645XL black cartridges each deliver roughly twice the yield of the standard equivalent for a modest price premium that pays for itself quickly.
